Celebrate International Women’s Day with advice from Women Owned Businesses of the DMV

This International Women’s Day, I want to showcase some amazing women of the DMV. These women all own small businesses, but all have so much power to do good!

Tomorrow is International Women’s Day and to celebrate, I have decided to only shop at women-owned businesses all day! You will be able to follow me throughout my day on Instagram stories @Danieminor13.

I was able to chat with all of the business owners about their businesses, advice for other women who want to start their own business and why International Women’s Day is important to them.

In no particular order, lets meet these leaders!

Meet the DMV Business Owners:

Sip City DC owners, Nikki Blank & Josie Gibbens

These two 20-somethings have created their version of Switchel.  As it says on their bottle, it is nature’s sports drink and a cocktail mixer. Sip City’s mission is to help people drink mindfully they way they eat and exercise! I was able to chat with Nikki, and she told me when she and Josie moved from Boston and Nashville, they saw how accurate the saying “work hard, play hard” is in DC and wanted to give them a way to still let loose on the weekend, but in a much healthier way!

Processed with VSCO with b5 preset

How they began Sip City:

So, I moved from Boston to D.C. in June, and Boston has Puritan drinking laws..which means you cannot make a sale on alcohol. So there is no such thing as a happy hour or a boozy brunch. You pay full price for every drink in Boston (omg!!). After college, I reassessed the drinking culture, and when I moved to D.C. I saw that people drank heavily from Friday afternoon to Sunday…but also doing it on the weekdays, too. I was not used to that, and neither was my body.

And that is sort of where the idea came from. There had to be a healthier way to [drink alcohol]. Our original mission formed around the drinking culture in D.C. and also the way people are drinking things all day and not thinking about what’s in them- whether it’s their coffee creamer or a sugary juice. We want people to re-think all of that!

What went from these two women brewing their own Switchel at home has turned into a business that is quickly become known all over D.C.

Do you have a piece of advice for other women who want to start a business?

Take a step back and think about why you are doing it. Make sure your idea is solid and that you have a support systems in place! Also, you have to make sure that you are passionate about everything.

If you are in a job that makes you unhappy, there is no reason at this age that you should be unhappy in a job, but it also doesn’t mean you have to go out to start something on your own.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

We are finally in a place where we see that women have been marginalized in every step of modern-day civilization but now it actually feels like change is happening. It’s looking back to see where we screwed up in the past and how can we move forward, that means more rights and more quality for women.

We care a lot about supporting other women, especially other local women and women in food because food can be a hard industry for women. We’ve often been underappreciated in this industry. We are spending every week of this month highlighting a different area of women’s history, so this week we are highlighting women in sports.

Follow these women at @SipCitydc on Instagram and Twitter!

Ringlet owner, Elise Crawford

Ringlet is a full-service digital marketing & branding agency, community and resource focused on serving women-owned small businesses in the D.C. area. We are a “full-service” agency because we work with clients to build their online marketing strategy and then our team can execute that strategy through social media management, email marketing, content creation, website design and event design.

We also host events that focus on providing women entrepreneurs with the education, tools and community that they need to make their businesses succeed.

How/Why did you begin Ringlet?

It was a total leap of faith! I graduated in 2015 with a Masters in Communications from JHU, and had been working for another woman-owned start-up in NYC at the time. Once I graduated, I knew that I wanted to make my dream of owning my own business a reality.
I come from a family of business owners so entrepreneurship was definitely ingrained in me from a young age. I’m fortunate to have had an amazing support system- my team, family, friends, the DC creative community- who have helped me establish RINGLET. It’s been a learning process- we’ve changed our service offerings, redesigned our website, hired and let go team members- and it’s been incredible to see how far we’ve come in two years.

What do you hope to see for the future of women in business? And do you have any advice for women who want to start their own business?

I hope women know the vast amount of options that they have for their lives. Thanks to the internet, there are so many new career options open to women. You do have the power to craft your own unique lifestyle! If you’d like to start your own business, spend a lot of time researching before you even open your doors: reach out to mentors, find a supportive community and most importantly, make sure there is a market need for the service or product that you will be offering. Don’t give up and take heart!

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

International Women’s Day means to me a celebration of all that women have accomplished of a community so far, a reflection on what we have to change on work for and hope that we can accomplish anything we put our minds to.

Glen’s Garden Market owner,
Danielle Vogel

After getting her start in policy and working on Capitol Hill for 10 years, Danielle did not think that she would become a fourth generation grocery store owner. But the grocery business runs deep in her roots. Danielle started her grocery business for a different reason than her family members.

Her whole life’s work was climate change progress. After noticing congress started becoming more conservative and needing to continue progress without them, Danielle opened Glen’s Garden Market in 2013 on Earth Day! During the 5 years they have been open, Danielle has helped launch 78 local food businesses, 43 of them founded by women!

Mission: Make incremental climate change progress by selling good food from close by and fostering relationships with farmers who treat their land, animals and ingredients with respect.

And every decision that is made for Glen’s, they keep that mission in mind, no matter how large or small the decision is! “You walk into Glen’s and it’s a very pretty grocery but every single way it is an intentional climate change progress agent.”

Tell me about your new AccelerateHer DC program:

This is the first time we are doing it! This is for our 5 year anniversary. Our notion is to get to 50 women-owned small businesses that are launched here at Glen’s by the time we turn 5.

I was thinking how we could really double down on our committment to growing women-driven small batch food companies in our region. And we came up with this idea of doing a business pitch competition. The application went live on March 1, and there are SO many prizes.

They include:

  • A $10,000 investment with no strings from Glen’s
  • A year-long professional mentorship with Danielle, the marketing director, Shana Mohamed, their grocery department head, Merrill
  • Free entry to the Good Food Mercantile in Brooklyn in July
  • Monthly HR and strategic analysis consulting services

What is your advice for women who want to start a business?

My advice is starting a business requires an amazing amount of resiliency. First of all, no matter what you’re doing you’re not going to be embraced or understood from day one, even if you’re the coolest grocery store that anyone has ever conceived.

Also, take your projections for how much you think it’s going to cost, and double it! And figure out how to get the help from people who have strengths where you have weaknesses. So, I am a lawyer…math skills NOT great- so, I hired the world’s most spectacular accountant! Build your team so it’s complementary to your skill set.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

Women bring exactly the same amount to the table. We are equally as aggressive, we’re equally analytic, we’re equally forward-thinking, we’re visionaries.

It’s really cool to get together to celebrate our accomplishments, but I personally don’t believe there is any implicit differentiation [from a man]. I am just as ambitious as any man I went to law school with, practiced law with, worked in the senate with and we would be well-served to remember that.

Alexasmind.com blogger, Alexa Garcia

Alexa is from NOVA, and is a great blogger that I met through the blogging network, InfluenceHer Collective. In addition to being a wonderful blogger, she runs a hand-lettering shop through her blog and on Etsy. You can tell that each product is truly made with love!

Your blog is absolutely beautiful! How long have you been blogging?

Thank you so much! I’ve actually only been blogging since October 2017. I had flirted with the idea of blogging for a few years leading up to it, but it wasn’t until October that I decided to fully take the leap into blogging.

What inspired you to begin your blog/custom design shop?

I love writing and being creative, and I always have wanted an outlet for my creativity. Blogging seemed like the best way to do that! I really love it.

How long have you been doing hand-lettering?

Growing up, I always had neat handwriting and played around with writing in different fonts. Around two years ago, I found out about calligraphy and hand-lettering and I fell in love with the process of creating hand-lettered items.

How important is it to you to shop at other local/small shops?

I think it is SO important to shop at local shops and support small business owners. Being a small-business owner myself, I’ve grown to understand how valuable hard work is and I want to support others as much as possible.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

International Women’s Day is a day to recognize women of all ages, races, ethnicity, and religions. It’s super important to me, because I believe that oftentimes, women are not fully recognized for all the amazing things they accomplish.

Why did you want to start your business?

I started my business back in 2013 when I was bored in one of my college classes, it started out as doodles to keep myself busy and pretty soon it came to life. I have always wanted to be able to make a living from what I can create with my own hands.

What is a piece of advice you have for other women who want to begin their own business?

For other women who want to start their own businesses- just go for it! It has been the most wonderful experience for me. I beleive if you pour your heart and soul into something there is no way you can go wrong.

Screen Shot 2018-03-07 at 8.48.34 PM.png

How important is supporting other small businesses to you?

Supporting other small businesses is extremely important to me. I go out of my way to do it. I purchase many supplies for my own business from other small businesses.

Why do you think it’s important to have International Women’s Day?

I think International Womens Day is important because it is a day to honor all the amazing things women have done, to show our strength and how far women have come as a whole.

I cannot explain how amazing it has been to learn more about these five businesses. I hope you enjoyed learning about them too! All of these women are from the DMV, and are fufilling their life-long dreams of creating a business, and if you have this dream too, listen to their advice.
Happy International Women’s Day to all of my boss babes! Thank you so much for supporting me every time you read one of my articles, share a post and helping me further my blogging dream!
Thank you to all of the women who have come before me for fighting for women’s equality and for the women and men who are still fighting with me for our rights!

My 7 Must-have Beauty and Skin Care Products of the Moment!

Happy weekend! I hope your Saturday is off to a great start. I love the weekend because it’s the best time for running errands and self care! Does anyone else LOVE running errands or is it just me?

While running errands, I always end up finding some great products that I have to try out! Recently, I’ve picked up six products that I know you also NEED!

It’s truly crazy to me how much one product can change your life (or in this case– seven products!). These six products are a part of my everyday routine.

The first product is the Defense Refresh (makeup) Setting Mist. What makes this setting spray different from others is this product has 50 SPF! What’s also amazing about this product is a great refresher for you to use throughout the day, especially around the late afternoon when you’re starting to feel tired; spritz this on your face and it will help wake you up!

We all know to use a makeup primer, but we a lot of us forget to use SPF, which is what actually is going to save our skin in the long-run! Supergoop also refrains from using sulfates and parabens in its products, so this product is good for your skin!

The next product that I am loving right now is Too Faced’s PB & Honey palette! I think this palette is a perfect everyday palette, but could also be used for a fun night time look, especially with that yellow! I purchased mine new from Poshmark, for less than at a Sephora/Ulta, and it had never been used! I found this great one discounted on Poshmark for you if you’re interested!

I love this palette because I think it complements my green eyes and blonde hair, but I think it would look great on any eye color.

For this look, I started with Dermalogica’s Barrier Repair makeup primer. This has CHANGED how my makeup looks and I will never not use it from here on out. I usually hate makeup primers because of the gross feeling they would leave during the day, but with this one I can’t even tell that I am wearing anything, which I LOVE!

I think I am late to the game on the It Cosmetics CC cream, but let me tell you, I am SO happy I have finally arrived with everyone else. This CC cream is light on the skin, but still provides full coverage. In addition to the beautiful coverage, it also has 50 SPF! No wrinkles for me! 😉

I am in their second shade, Light. I do recommend wearing a powder with this because of the SPF, it can leave a slight shine.

Skin Care

After your long day, it is finally time to take all of your makeup off, and the best way to do it is with Neutrogena’s Ultra Light cleansing oil. What’s also amazing is this greatness is less than $10! I originally got this in my seasonal BeautyCon box!

It removes all of your makeup and also cleans your skin. My skin feels so fresh each morning and night.

Three to four days a week, I make sure to use my new scrub from The Body Deli. I use their Blueberry Fusion Scrub. A friend of mine commented that she thinks my skin looks like it’s glowing, and I know it’s because of this scrub! It added the radiance that I longed for.

I also tend to get clogged pores, which makes them look so large. When I got a facial about five weeks ago, I asked why my pores get so large, and she told me it was because I wasn’t using a scrub! The week after, I stopped by Blush Med Spa in Bethesda and they recommended I try this, and I am forever thankful!

Pro-tip: If you want to try this scrub, keep it in the fridge because the products used are organic, and it will last longer!

And last, but definitely not least, my perfume must-have product is this new Apricot Bloom from Target! This is from Target’s new Good Chemistry line. I love the description for the perfume from Target’s website.

“Good Chemistry is know-how meets nature; a just-right composition of instinct and identity that lets your true beauty bloom from the inside. Fragrance notes of apricot, neroli and amber make our Apricot Bloom perfume thoughtful + true with a free spirit.”

I’ve worn this perfume every day for the past two weeks, and have received compliments every day! It’s the perfect spring perfume.

What are a few of your must-haves of the moment? Share them with me on social media @danieminor13. <3 Also, please let me know if you love any of these products as well!

Paper Source’s Galentine’s Day Mixer + Why Creativity Helps your Mental Health

If you follow me on Instagram (@Danieminor13 ;)), you saw that I spent my Valentine’s Day at Paper Source in Annapolis. They hosted a Galentine’s Day Mixer, which was a blast! I learned a few new crafting tricks- hello heat embossing?! How have I never learned about you before?

While I had a blast last night, I learned something more than that. If you’ve followed Defining Danie for a while, you may know that I struggle with anxiety. But, something you may not know, because I haven’t talked about it is that I have been struggling with the job hunt. Recently, because of the job search, I have felt extremely anxious and have had a few panic attacks because of it.

So you may be wondering why am I talking about this while writing about my fabulous time at Paper Source? Well, last night was the first night in a week that I haven’t felt a panic attack come on, and I really think it’s because of how awesome the Galentine’s Day mixer was! Crafting, photo booth pictures, and a scavenger hunt? It was the perfect, stress-reliever that I have been searching for! While a couple of girls who work there and I talked about my job search, it still did not bring me down, because we talked about it in a positive manner.

The night was full of laughter and life goals!

My new life goal may be to become a professional heat embosser? Who knows?!

What I do know is that I will be making some frequent stops to Paper Source’s next workshops! While I was there I had a blast, and I really think craft nights should be required for every adult in the world.

A “craft night” may sound childish, but not everyone gets to have a creative element in their day-to-day lives, so it will give you two hours of creativity that you may not even know you needed. Allowing myself those two hours last night helped my anxiety a ton and if you struggle with anxiety, it may help with yours, too! While I 100% know that crafting will not cure my anxiety, I am always looking for new ways to lower those anxious feelings.

Also, I bought a few really cute items. I will link them down below!

Sugarfina Margarita Gummies

Never Stop Growing Mug

Shout out to the lovely ladies who hosted the Galentine’s Day Mixer last night, Dani, Ashley and Jacie- thank you for celebrating Valentine’s Day with me!

How I re-created my room to be my favorite space in the house!

When I moved home in May, I felt like my room was not actually “my room.” When I originally went to college, my mom got rid of my furniture because it was so old, and honestly, it needed to go. When I would come home from breaks from college, I would stay in our guest room or our extremely comfy couch in the living room.

I felt out of place and really wanted a place of my own because I knew I would be at home for at least another year.

I didn’t know what I wanted to do with the guest room, but I knew to keep costs down, I would have to keep the bedroom furniture, but could add fun pieces to make it feel like my own space!

After looking at various Instagram pages, talking with my best friend Erin (a TON) about styles we liked and seeing one of my favorite YouTuber, Sarah Belle’s new room…I decided the Boho Chic style was the way I wanted to go!

Similarly to Sarah, I LOVE color and texture! I knew I wanted to do warmer tones, such as, corals, yellows and pinks (which are also my favorite colors). I LOVE pillows, and am not lying when I tell you I bought 20 pillows before finding the five I wanted to keep!

The decoration of my room didn’t happen over one night- it’s been four months of finding various pieces that I just wanted needed for my room! During the beginning when I was figuring out what Boho Chic meant for me, and I knew it had to include a macrame wall hanging, so that’s where I began! My friend Erin happened to be designing her room at her new townhouse, and was in HomeGoods one day and saw the most magical one for me!

Literally knew I had to have this! Especially because it was only $24! It’s from HomeGoods, so I wasn’t able to find the exact one, but I found ones with similar colors that you might like: here, here, here and  here.

All of the pillows except the white fluffy one are from TJ Maxx,(I am definitely a Maxxinista!) and the white one is from Bed Bath and Beyond.

Room5.jpg THIS ONE

Room7.jpg THIS.jpg

Room8.jpg this.jpg

So, I went all over looking for the perfect pillows! I knew I wanted the Southwestern look, but it was actually a lot harder to find than I thought it would be to find all different pattern pillows that fit together.

The latest addition to my room is the coral bench, which also lifts up to be extra storage!

Room11.jpg this one.jpg

This laundry hamper was given to me by my sister who just moved out and didnt’ want it anymore. I loved the wicker, but wanted to jazz it up a bit, so I learned a DIY to make the pom poms! Later this week, I will be posting how I made them, but for a cheap update, I think it added a nice spunk!

Room10.jpg THI.jpg

Last week on my Instagram, I shared how much I LOVE my wallpaper!  This removable wallpaper is from a company called WallsNeedLove in the print called Merry Prankster.

The fun wall hanging in this photo is also a DIY! I bought the supplies from Michael’s, and I used the same yarn for this wall hanging and the pom poms.

As soon as I started re-doing my room, Target came out with its new Project 62 line, which gave me the glam/chicness that I wanted to include. This similar chair and ottoman are SO comfortable. The chair that I got had a small rip on the bottom, so I was able to get a pretty good discount. I got the chair for $75, and it was on sale at the time for $125, so I was pretty happy! I think the ottoman complements the wallpaper and the rug in front of the duo so nicely!

Pro tip:Before you purchase this chair, measure the width of your doorways because it BARELY made it into my room. I sit in this space a lot to write my blog posts and watch my fave YouTube videos!

Target’s newer collection for their Project 62 line featured these ADORABLE book ends, and I HAD to have them. I did not care that they were $20, they had to be mine. I think they added a really nice touch to my dresser.

Hair hacks to keep your hair beautiful year-round!

Hi! I hope everyone is having a great start to their new year so far. I really feel like 2018 is going to be a great year for all of us, I can just feel it!

For it to be a great year, it has to include having great hair. So, today, I am going to share some advice with you on how to have great hair, even during these dry winter months!

My hair is really one of those things that I obsess over- the color, the cut, the texture! I don’t know why, but it’s something of mine that I just love (even though sometimes it can be a frizzy mess)! I naturally very wavy hair, but I wear it straight.

Tip #1)  Minimize use of heat

Heat can be pretty brutal for your hair if you are using it too often. We all know this, but I think we choose to not listen/care. I try to only use heat on my hair 3 times per week, at max. I also do not blow-dry my hair. I’ll let it air-dry if I have time!

Tip #2) Use a heat protectant, if you do use heat!

When I do choose to use heat, I always make sure I use a heat protectant so I don’t ruin my hair. By using heat protectant, you can help preserve the health of your hair. My favorite one is the Hot Toddy by Dry Bar. Some products feel like they weigh my hair down, but this one leaves my hair feeling normal!

Tip #3) Do not over wash your hair

I am not sure who ever thought it would be a good idea to tell us that we need to wash our hair every day, but they were wrong! It does not matter how thin your hair is, you do not need to wash it every day unless you were working out or swimming, etc. Our hair produces natural oils that are actually good for our hair, and every time you wash your hair you are stripping your natural nourishment for your hair!

A few years ago, I “trained” my hair to not need to be washed as often. In this blog post, you can read how I did that!

Tip #4) After using heat, find an oil that you love and apply it to the ends of your hair

After applying any type of heat, I make sure to add an oil to the ends to put back that moisture that they crave! This one by R+Co. is my favorite! My hairstylist used this on me when I used to go for my weekly blowouts, and I couldn’t get enough, so I bought some for home! In addition to helping keep my ends beautiful, it also helps any frizziness I may have.

These are my four hair tips, but my friends over at eSalon sent me some cool cards with some hair tips for you to follow so you can have great hair year-round!

My favorite hair hack that I want to try from eSalon’s tips is the “Kitchen’s Key” hair mask on card one! A warm coconut oil hair mask? Yes, please!!

What are you favorite hair tips for keeping your hair all-year round? Share them with me @Danieminor13!

Hold Your Holiday Party Using Paperless Post!

This post is sponsored by Paperless Post.  All opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that make Defining Danie possible!

With the holidays in full-swing now, we are all a little stressed! Even under all of this stress, we still want to have a good time though, right, ladies?!

A few weeks ago, I decided I wanted to host my first Friendsgiving! I knew what I needed was cute plates, utensils, etc., but I needed to figure out an easy way to get all of my friends here without just a basic text message.

Friendsgiving table

I decided I would use Paperless Post! Paperless Post is a beautiful electronic customizable invitation. The reason I admire Paperless Post is because they actually send an email that looks like an actual card that you would receive in the mail! It was so easy to use and let me keep track of my friends who were able to attend and those who were not all in one place!

I cannot get over how CUTE the invitation was! There were so many options for which card to use, but here is the one I ended up choosing:

Screen Shot 2017-11-13 at 11.30.08 AM.png

Screen Shot 2017-11-13 at 11.31.28 AM.png

Now, that I sent my invites, I had to plan the meal! We decided that my mom would get the turkey for me, I would make the sweet potato casserole and the green beans and my friends would bring their favorite side dishes!

After the planning, I made sure to pick up the cutest plates and gold plasticware from Target (because where else would I go!?).

Although Friendsgiving time is over, we still have so many holidays coming up! Make your life easier by using Paperless Post. I swear it will save you so much time, and it is so much more personal than a Facebook invite or a basic text.

My friends and I have our annual Wine and Onesie party coming up, and I already know that I will be using Paperless Post to coordinate! I hope you enjoy this picture from a few years ago!

My Black Friday Finds!

Can we talk about the great sales that hit stores this weekend? One store in particular had the best sales in my opinion… One of my favorites had daily sales leading up to Black Friday, and then the whole store was 50 percent off on Black Friday!

Do you know what store I’m talking about?

For the past three years, my mom and I always make sure to hit Old navy on Black Friday and for the past two years, we’ve gone after Thanksgiving dinner- it has become one of my favorite traditions!

I also purchased some online that I have not received yet, but I will post screen shots below of the items! I purchased everything in an XXL in store.

Here’s what I got (make sure you check them out on Cyber Monday too, because I know they are continuing to do 40 percent off.).

Jacket/ Shirt/ Jeans

Shirt / Jeans/ Scarf

Scarf/ Vest/ Shirt

Dress (I am wearing as a shirt)

Because I did this photoshoot in the middle of D.C., I could not change into this beautiful jumpsuit I got, but here is a photo from Old Navy’s website:

I purchased this in an XXL, and it fits me PERFECTLY! It actually is a little longer on me than on the model because I have short legs!

What I purchased online and still waiting to receive:

I know everyone is asking, how much was all of that?! After adding up everything and I got everything for LESS than $200!! I got it for $199.20 😉

I am so happy with all of my purchases! I hope you love everything too and check out Old Navy’s Cyber Monday deals.
