NYC Street Style

NYC is the style capital of the world, so their street style is the place to see all of the hottest trends. This week I walked around NYC with my eyes wide open to find a few people who I thought were capturing current trends, in their own way!

I also took a look at what people were wearing at a few events in NYC this week:

First event I decided to take a look at was the Pride Festival! I searched under the hashtag #Pridenyc2016 to see if I could see any trends that were being followed and sure enough, look at the girl below, she is a part of the ’90s choker trend!

Second event I found was a blogger event, Carbs and Cocktails (I wish I could have gone, it looked adorable!) I loved that each blogger is rocking their own style. I <3 the girl’s outfit in the middle.

Check out these bloggers blogs up next:

American Magazines or Global Magazines?

So, I picked up two magazines last week, one American and one Italian, and I noticed some stark differences between the two. I do not normally read global magazines, but I was intrigued to pick up Vogue Italia last Friday. The American magazine I picked up was StyleWatch.

I immediate saw a difference in the magazines, as I know they are for different readers, but I was still surprised to see how vastly different the two were.

Caitie-Greene-Vogue-Italia-May-2016-620x818  StyleWatch-July-2016-450x600

Something I found really cool that Vogue Italia did was use an actual model for the cover, rather than intriguing people to buy the magazine using celebrities. American culture really heavily focuses on celebrities, so a lot of times if we do not recognize who is on the cover of the magazine, chances are we will not buy it!

Taking another look at the covers, we can also see how much more marketing the American magazine uses… screaming at the buyers to “FIND YOUR SUMMER STYLE!” ” 186 STEALS UNDER $100!” while the Italian Vogue simply says “New Vision.”

By me stating the obvious differences of the covers does not mean that I like the Vogue Italia cover more, because I actually enjoy the StyleWatch cover much more, but I do not know if that is just me being the American buyer that I am because I am used to covers like these, or if I actually genuinely enjoy the cover more.

After taking a further look into the magazine, I can also see that Vogue Italia continues their more simplistic style. Vogue is known for being mostly ads and editorials, so this is nothing new to see this. But their ads are completely different from ads that you would see in an American magazine, even American Vogue.

This ad is seen in Vogue Italia:

Vogue IT ad 1

vs.

This ad seen in American StyleWatch:

nexplanon-ConsumerCampaign_Ad

Look how different these two ads are! While they are both fashion magazines, one is showing fashion and the other is showing an ad for birth control. I think StyleWatch is marketing to their readers by having ads such as the one above, while Vogue Italia is attempting to market the clothing using a creative approach.

Maybe if I had picked up American Vogue, I would not being seeing the birth control ad, but I would still see ads for shampoos, and I am not seeing that at all in the Vogue Italia.

A lot of StyleWatch’s articles are about “How to get this celeb’s look for less.” I LOVE these articles because being in college, I cannot afford the drastic prices they pay for clothing, but I still want to rock the same look as them. StyleWatch is actually one of my favorite magazines, and that is because they are attempting to market to young women, just like myself.

After taking a look at Vogue Italia’s media kit, I saw that they are targeting an older target market than myself. They are attempting to target women 25-44, who are “upper levels of the population” meaning they want upper class women who can afford the clothing they are advertising! (AKA…not me!) But this doesn’t mean I don’t love looking at the beautiful clothes across their pages.

Something both magazines doing a better job at than they did before is their use of who is shown in their magazines. Vogue Italia does a good job with incorporating women of older ages and StyleWatch does a good job of incorporating a ton of diversity, yay for doing things they should be doing!

I haven’t written anything like this article before, but if you would like me to continue to talk about different magazines from around the world, let me know @Danieminor13 on social media!

Les Copains x ’40s

After doing some research, I really wanted to find a collection that captured ’40s fashion. I think it is really interesting how fashion changed because of World War Two.

I find amazing how all of the United States had to ration a number of items so they could save the fabric and money for uniforms, food and other supplies for the soldiers. Because of these restrictions, fashion had to also become “rationed” with shorter hemlines and new ways to recycle clothing.

“In the fourth year of the war, fabric has become an expensive commodity. Fabric economy is essential; magazines offer advice on how to recycle old clothing,” stated on http://www.marquise.de/.

I think one of the reasons I love the quote above is because I love thrifting. Although I do not live in a time now where I need to recycle my clothing, thrifting is my way of recycling clothing.

Looking into Les Copains Fall Winter 16 Collection:

While looking through photos, the first thing I noticed were the colors. She chose muted colors, which were a popular choice in the ’40s.

Because of the ration, even colors were affected.

Photos from the Les Copains FW16 Collection:

LC2

LC3.jpg

All of these looks have the same hemline and skirts. The material used for skirts is also similar to the pencil skirts that were typical in the ’40s.  Her collection also includes the synched waist that was common within the ’40s.

Her collection combines a lot of texture, which also makes up for the lack of color in her collection.

The looks that I have posted above, my favorite is the last one because of the sequined top. Although this would not be typical in the ’40s, I like that she made these looks more modern for FW 16.

Usually when people focus their collections on the ’40s, designers will focus their looks on the “Rosie the Riveter” looks because women finally had the opportunity to go off and work because men were overseas fighting the war, but Les Copains focuses more on the feminine side of the ’40s.

Isabel Marant x 80’s

In the era of the birth of MTV, Michael Jackson and hip hop music, the ’80s was a time of clothing fads that were inspired by music trends, teased hair and of course, we cannot forget, spandex.

Isabel Marant’s Spring/Summer 2016 (SS16) collection pulls inspiration right out of the ’80s. Marant’s collection has updated versions included modern parachute pants, metallics, cropped jackets and high-waisted shorts (if you can even call the underwear-esc bottoms, shorts!).

IM

A trend in the ’80s was the shoulder pads; in the photo above, Marant uses the shoulder pads as inspiration for the cropped jacket, without overdoing it. She has the silhouette mastered without having to include hefty should pads into the mix of the jacket.

_ARC0510

In a Vogue runway review, author Chioma Nnadi said “the influences on (Marant’s) new collection skewed more North India than South Bronx,” when comparing Marant’s SS16 collection to the 1980’s.

Before researching for collections that were inspired by past decades, I had never heard of Isabel Marant, but I can definitely say I really enjoy the way she incorporates her inspirations into her designs.

_ARC0214

In the look above, Marant followed two trends: the mini skirt and spandex pants.

With hints of Indian culture, metallics and hip hop, I feel like Marant hit the nail on the head with this collection. I will definitely be looking out for her next SS collection in September.

Happy second birthday, DD, the Cavs win & my second week recap!

Time is going by so quickly! I cannot believe I’m already finished week two in the city.

I’m sad that I wasn’t able to post this on Sunday, but I was a little busy rooting for my team in the NBA Finals! I have seriously adapted very well to living the city life. I have always known that I would thrive living in a city and not just “right outside of one.”

Week two events:

The week started off with my going to my new favorite place, Dry Bar! I had a 7:45 a.m. blowout appointment. I seriously love the Dry Bar on the Upper West Side.

The Upper West Side has become my home. I live on West 88th, which I’ve been comparing to the suburbs of the city.
I have my classes in Midtown/the Garment District (West 39th) and my internship is in the Flatiron (West 20th).
On Tuesday I had one of my classes, but this this isn’t a regular class, it’s a cool class ;). This class we get to go around to different fashion showrooms, stores and offices to meet buyers/ merchandisers and learn more about their companies. This past Tuesday, we got to go to Rebecca Minkoff in SoHo. Oh my gosh, it was fantastic! We met with their lead store manager and learn how Rebecca Minkoff is a leader in fashion technology; even her store is full of technology. My class even received 20% off merchandise in the store after the tour, you know the thrifter in me LOVED the discount!

It was so funny shopping after the tour because I was face timing my sister because she also loves Rebecca Minkoff, so I knew she’d want something! While face timing my sister and shopping, I was talking to the store manager because I realized they sold the Rebecca Minkoff x Minnetonka Moccasins collection. The reason I thought this was so cool, is because the agency I’m interning for represents Minnetonka!

After me telling him this, he invited me to an event they had that evening for Minnetonka. I went to the event later that evening and learned that it was being hosted by Rebecca Minkoff and two awesome bloggers who run Mimosas and Manhanttans. They were such sweet girls!

Fast forward to Friday-
My roommate, her friend from work and I went to dinner at this amazing Italian restaurant, Vapiano. It had a different concept for a restaurant. Their website can definitely explain it better than I can, but the food was great. I had pasta, wine and dessert for only $25, which is hard to come by in the city.

Saturday was my favorite day last week because it was Defining Danie’a TWO year anniversary! Can you believe it? Because I can’t. To celebrate, I went to a rooftop bar called Loopy Doopy! They serve prosecco, rosecco (rosé and prosecco 😉 ) with Popsicles in the glass!!!! It was AMAZING.

We had amazing views, I had great company with me and I honestly couldn’t have asked for more to celebrate Defining Danie’s second birthday.

On Sunday, I met a friend doe brunch at a restaurant that I found right near where I live called Good Enough to Eat. If you are ever looking for a great brunch restaurant, don’t even second guess, go there!!! I had banana walnut pancakes, eggs and turkey sausage.
Right after brunch, I met a few friends from my internship to go see the musical Wicked. I cannot believe that I haven’t seen that sooner. We sat in the 8th row, it was fabulous. I really need to give a huge shoutout to my friend Cayley because she received the tickets from her grandma and then invited me! The musical was so great. I wasn’t exactly sure what the plot was before going, I only knew that it was based off of The Wizard of Oz. The actors in the show were some of the best I’ve ever seen.

After the show, I rushed to a bar called The Blind Pig, so I could save me and my three friends seats for the NBA Finals game. As most of you know, I go to school in Ohio, about 45 minutes outside of Cleveland, so the Cavs have really become “my team.” It was so fun because all of the girls I watched the game with were from Ohio, so we were all rooting so hard!

When they won I started ugly crying of happiness! We were actually screaming we were so excited. I honestly wish I had been in Cleveland that night. When Lebron cried on TV because he was so proud of his team, my heart was full of so much pride.
Thank you to everyone who has made it with me for the past two years of Defining Danie! Thank you to everyone who continuously reads my posts, shares them, follows me on social media and honestly just supports me through my blogging dreams. I cannot wait for another two years with all of you!

Defining Danie takes NYC week 1

image

So I know a lot of people who follow me on Instagram have been wondering WHAT IS DANIE DOING IN NYC?! I am not in my usual home, Annapolis for the summer because I am interning and taking classes at Kent State’s NYC Studio. I am taking a Fashion in the Media class and a tour class, where we get to tour around various places in NYC including The Met and the FFANY show. I am interning at the fashion PR agency, Agentry!

Getting to know the city this week has been an event in itself. Being from right outside D.C., I am used to the city life, and I LOVE it, but being IN the city 24/7, it’s definitely an adjustment.

In addition to beginning my new classes and my new internship, week one has consisted of:

  • Finding amazing food on every corner of the city
  • Figuring out the Subway…the D.C. Metro is so much easier
  • Making some awesome friends at my internship
  • Attending a beautiful service at a new Synagogue
  • Attending a free preview of Ferris Bueler’s Day Off with a friend I haven’t seen in over a year! (I also had never seen the movie…I know I’m awful!)
  • Finding an adorable, on-the-road Flower truck called Uprooted (I posted an adorable picture on Twitter! @danieminor13)
  • And the coolest… My Roomie and I stumbled upon the Tony Awards and watched all the celebrities go into the show!

I cannot wait to see what the rest of the summer holds for me! I will be posting weekly updates of my time, so check back on Sunday evenings for weekly recaps.

Thrifty Thursday: Getting Ready for Vacation!

I cannot believe I have not done a Thrifty Thursday in over two months! To be honest, I had to take a break because at school my closet was overflowing with the awesome deals I was finding! This week I decided I would head over to my favorite consignment store, Oh My Darling in Annapolis, Md. to see what deals they had going on.

They recently posted on Instagram a photo of a few pairs of pineapple earrings and I knew that I had to have these for the summer!

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 7.52.32 PM

Amy, the owner of Oh My Darling also posted today about a sale she had today if you mentioned you saw it on her Instagram.

Even though I originally went to the store for just the earrings, I knew I would not only be leaving with just one thing… I also found the perfect dress for a trip I have coming up this weekend to the Bahamas!

IMG_2066

The dress is made by Just Be… I tried to find how much the dress was sold for originally, but I was unable to find it. I can tell the dress is made with a quality cotton though, so I am guessing it was definitely sold for more than I bought it. I purchased this dress for $16!

IMG_2078

The lightweight cotton will be perfect for the hot weather in the Bahamas!

Out of the two things I purchased today, I would definitely say the earrings would be my favorite. I am in love with the pineapples. I am currently obsessing over anything pineapple related!

IMG_2046

I also love the earrings because they were made by a local jewelry designer! Here is her information if you are interested in purchasing this pair of earrings or looking to see if she sells something similar:

IMG_2049

I left the store today only spending a total of $45!

For all of my Annapolis area readers, Oh My Darling is having their biggest shopping event yet that you will not want to miss! Coming up on June 20, they are hosting an event called The Longest Day, which is raising money for Alzheimer’s awareness.

Leading up to the event, they will be having their #30DaysofDresses fundraiser. For every dress sold from May 21-June 20, Oh My Darling will donate 10 percent of the sale to their Longest Day team. If you go into the store and try on a dress and use the hashtags #30DaysofDresses and #THELONGESTDAY, they will donate $1 to their team.

Screen Shot 2016-05-19 at 8.18.42 PM

If this didn’t sound intriguing enough for you… on June 20 if you make a $5 or $10 donation to their team, you will receive an empty Oh My Darling shopping bag, which you can fill with anything you can fit into the bag and receive 10 percent or 20 percent off of the items in the bag!

For more information about the event you can contact Oh My Darling’s owner, Amy Darling at amy@shopohmydarling.com!

It felt so great to thrift again! I am glad that I broke my thrifting drought at Oh My Darling!

21 Things You Should Know About This 21-Year-Old

I cannot believe that I am 21 years old! I have been 21 for a month and a half and I have really thought a lot about 21 things about me that my readers may not not know about me!

But first I want to talk about what I did for my 21st birthday! I was able to celebrate two times, once with my friends at school and then another with my family and my friends in Maryland.

With my friends from school:

My friends set up a “Bar Appearance”in downtown as we called it because I was really nervous about making it a bar crawl. I did not really want to go to a ton of bars, so we chose the two that we through I would really enjoy and stuck to those!

IMG_1349

My birthday happened to be the same day as “Fake Patty’s Day” in Kent, Ohio, which is why everyone is wearing green!

With my friends in Maryland:

My sister set up an amazing birthday celebration! She set up a party bus for me and my friends to ride from Annapolis into D.C. for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants called Mission. It has amazing Mexican food. It was great because I not only got to see my great friends from Maryland, I also got to see my best friend, Jake, who I know from Kent State. Quit Tanning Before You Even Begin!

As we are gearing up for the last few weeks of the semester, we are getting ready for some summer fun! During the past few weeks of school, I had so many friends talking about a very common topic that comes about during this time of the year…tanning. I know I have talked about this before, but I really felt the need to again.

When my friends talk about tanning multiple times per week (or even at all) it honestly terrifies me because I know that my friends and so many young adults know the harm that tanning can cause them, but they continue to do it every week.

I wanted to share some facts with you all:

Tanning infographic

Other than skin cancer, tanning leads to so many other harmful side effects. If you look at many people who have tanned for a long time, you can usually tell that they have been effected by it based off how their skin appears. They have spots and more wrinkles at their age than they probably wouldn’t have had if they did not always strive to be tanner than the rest.

If you are currently someone who tans, do NOT think that skin cancer and melanoma are something that cannot affect you now. On my last post about skin cancer, I talked about how I have never tanned before but I had surgery on my back because I had a mole that was “pre-melanoma,” also known as an atypical nevi.

During my surgery I was not put asleep and they just numbed my back. When I asked how many stitches I had, my doctor estimated somewhere around 250, so it was not just as simple as removing the mole and then I was done.

While skin cancer is the most treatable of all of the cancers, it is also one that spreads very fast if not caught early enough. I am so grateful for the doctor who saw the mole on my back and realized that it was not a healthy mole.

I know that for a lot of people they “don’t care” what happens to them as long as they are tan, but I just wanted to point out some facts for you incase you did not actually know some of the harmful side effects!

Also, one last thing…in my opinion fake tanning does not look good, people are either orange or they look burned.

I would love to hear your opinions of tanning in a tanning bed!
